The Impact of Global Learning

Coming into FIU I thought I would fit right in, the name of the school is Florida International University after all. In my first semester, I never felt more out of place. I did not see people that looked like me in my classes and if I did it would only be 3 or 4 compared to the hundred other students I had in my classes. In my classes, I had to make sure I paid extra attention, go to every class, and perform highly on exams not only because I wanted to be a good student, but because I felt like I was a representation of black girls all around.

The global learning requirement that FIU has, is probably one of the best things that FIU has to offer. My global learning classes were a representation of what the real world looked like and it is in those classes where I felt like despite the color of my skin, I belonged. In those classes I learned of religions that I never knew existed, heard languages that I never heard spoken before, and I learned of history other than American History. These classes showed me how though we are all different, we are the same. All of us despite of race, color, religion or gender in the end just want a life living for. At a young age, I always respected every individual despite of their backgrounds, but the global learning program deepened the respect that I had for others and it awakened a voice inside of me. In the beginning of my college career, I would go to these global learning events and not really interact or discuss because I thought my voice did not matter. However, the more events that I went to I realized that I could not be more wrong because my voice did matter. I have to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, hear for those who will not listen, and see for those who choose to be blind by the events occurring in our world. For the longest time, I only considered myself when I made decisions. The global learning classes that I took made me realize that my decisions in life can have a huge impact on others and these classes challenged me to make a difference in the world.

The global learning program at FIU taught me be a citizen of the world and to align myself with what is right and fair. I am down for a cause as long as it helps someone in need. Whether I am packing meals for children in Africa, raising money to send to the people of Nicaragua, or helping out at local events I am making a difference. Problems do not get fixed if we avoid them, we have to educate ourselves and react accordingly. As we lay in our comfortable beds tonight or sit in our well air-conditioned homes, it is easy to forget that many people around the world do not have the luxuries that we have. In life, we have to deal with the hand we are dealt, but there is nothing wrong with shuffling the cards around and shaping a better future. One thing that the global learning program taught me is that it is never too late to make a change and we can always do more. As I look around the world today, I see a few people that could have used some global learning classes back in their day. One does not have to agree with a certain religion or speak the same language as someone to understand them. We all come from different parts of the world, but that does not mean we cannot come together. Just because my time here at FIU has come to end, that does not mean I will stop educating myself on global issues or engaging in local/global communities. My journey has just begun and I want to leave my footprint all over the world. I do not know where exactly where life will take me, but I have a passion for volunteering and I want to put my skills that I have acquired to use all around the world. We cannot hope for a better tomorrow, if we do not work on today.
